During the golden window period, MCU manufacturers with high "product completeness" can quickly seize the market by relying on their first-mover advantage.

This article makes an in-depth comparison of the "product completeness" of MCU manufacturers from multiple dimensions: the number of part numbers, the coverage of mid- to high-end and low-end products, the completeness of ecological construction, and the coverage of downstream applications:


1) GigaDevice has obvious innovation advantages in terms of product material number and coverage of mid-to-high-end and low-end products, and national technology is catching up quickly.
2) In terms of ecological construction (for MCU customized development), there is not much difference between each company. GigaDevice has more choices of third-party development tools and has a slight advantage.
3) In terms of downstream applications, most of them start from consumption. Among them, GigaDevice Innovation has shifted its emphasis from consumption to industrial consumption. For automotive products, GigaDevice, Chipsea Technology, Huada Semiconductor, and BYD Semiconductor have already produced products. Production, Zhongying Electronics and National Technology plan to launch automotive-grade products.

MCUs include 8-bit, 16-bit and 32-bit MCUs. The more bits, the more complex the structure, but the stronger the processing power, the more functions can be implemented.

1. 32-bit MCU:

There is a gap between Shanghai and outside Shanghai in terms of high-end layout and number of materials. GigaDevice is the leader in mainland China, and national technology is developing rapidly. We have counted nearly 7000/500+ 32-bit products overseas/domestic respectively:

(1) ARM Cortex M cores are mainstream overseas. Overseas, except for Renesas, which mainly develops its own products (accounting for 78%), M series core products account for as high as 81%, and self-developed core products account for 16%. Domestically, there are few self-developed cores, with the M series accounting for more than 90%, and a small number of manufacturers have launched products based on RISC-V and Xtensa cores.
(2) In the field of high-end products, there is a gap at home and abroad. GigaDevice is the leader in mainland China and national technology is developing rapidly. ARM cores include different mid-range, high-end and low-end products. The use of M7/33/35P/55 high-end cores is one of the intuitive manifestations of the manufacturer's capabilities. At present, major overseas manufacturers basically provide a comprehensive range of high, medium and low-end materials, with low/medium/high-end material numbers accounting for 38%/52%/10% respectively. There is still much room for improvement in the layout of mainland manufacturers in the high-end field. Among them, GigaDevice Innovation is the leader. It will officially launch high-performance products based on the ARM Cortex M33 core in October 2020. In addition, National Technology is developing high-performance products based on M7. Launching in 2022. (3) In terms of the number of material numbers, there is a 10-fold gap between domestic and overseas manufacturers, with mainland manufacturers developing. Among overseas manufacturers, except Microchip and Texas Instruments, which have 300-500 types of 32-bit products, other manufacturers have thousands of product numbers. In mainland China, the current leading manufacturers include GigaDevice (370+ units), Huada Semiconductor (100+ units), and National Technology (80+ units).

2. 8-bit MCU:

Mainland manufacturer Zhongzhongying Electronics leads the way. The number of 8-digit product part numbers from domestic and overseas manufacturers is generally less than that of 32-digit products. Here we have counted more than 1,600 products from 5 overseas manufacturers and 122 products from 4 mainland manufacturers:

(1) Overseas self-developed architecture is the main one, and mainland 8051 architecture is the main one. In terms of 8-bit product cores, they can generally be divided into two categories: self-developed cores and cores based on the 8051 open source architecture. Because 8-bit products overseas were developed earlier, most use self-developed cores, accounting for 81% of our statistics. Most domestic companies use the 8051 architecture. Among the manufacturers we counted, only Chipsea Technology uses self-developed cores.
(2) In terms of the number of material numbers, there are also gaps at home and abroad. Among mainland manufacturers, Zhongying Electronics has an absolute advantage. The number of part numbers of major overseas manufacturers ranges from 100 to 600. On the mainland, except for Zhongying Electronics, which has launched more than 80 products, the number of other manufacturers' part numbers is within 30 pieces.

3. Ecological construction: The hardware development tools are relatively complete, but the software supporting facilities are still lacking. Because engineers need to do customized development based on MCU, a good ecological environment can make the development process more convenient. We compared 7 mainland manufacturers and 5 overseas manufacturers (including Taiwan, China) from the following three dimensions:

(1) Hardware: mainly refers to development boards and other auxiliary hardware. All mainland companies officially provide development boards. There is no obvious gap between domestic and foreign countries in this link. (
(2) Software: At present, most companies in mainland China directly use third-party development tools, including Keil, IAR, etc., among which GigaDevice supports many third-party tools. Overseas, the choices are more diverse, and some manufacturers provide self-developed development tools.
(3) Learning materials: Compared with overseas manufacturers, domestic manufacturers have more advantages in Chinese learning materials. At the same time, we also learn from overseas manufacturers, establish developer communities, launch university plans, etc., to establish local advantages.

4. Downstream application layout: Mainland China starts from consumer electronics and expands to industry and automobiles. Overseas manufacturers basically have a comprehensive layout in consumption, industry, and automobiles, but each company focuses on different things. Among them, Microchip (focusing on 8-bit) and STMicroelectronics (focusing on 32-bit) focus on consumption and industry, while NXP and Renesas focus on automobiles. In mainland China, most manufacturers choose to first enter the consumer field with lower performance requirements, and then move to the industrial level. Among them, GigaDevice has gradually switched from focusing on consumption to focusing on both consumption and industry. As for automotive-grade products, due to higher requirements in terms of product performance, reliability, and longevity, mainland manufacturers are currently less involved. 5. Team structure: Each team has its own characteristics.
